Doctor Who: 10 Epic Matt Smith Moments Peter Capaldi Won't Top

5. Mr Clever

Another Gaiman episode and another example of Matt Smith's versatility. When he becomes partially upgraded to a Cyberman, the Doctor develops a split personality and it takes a great amount of effort to avoid being controlled by the Cyber-Planner. The scene is highlighted by a game of chess against himself, and a barrage of quick-fire dialogue that ramps up the pace. Already a fast talker, Smith turns up the volume when playing the Cyberman version of himself, reeling off lightning-quick sentences. Gaiman himself said that he wouldn't have contemplated writing the scene for anyone else. Despite the sheer madness of it all, the most impressive thing is that Smith manages to pull it off so well. It's a delightfully creepy performance, and yet so Smithian at the same time. To sum it up, you need just listen to the Cyber-Planner when he takes control: "I'm so clever already and now I'm a million times more clever and what a brain! Not a human brain. Not even slightly human. I think I'm going to have to completely rework the neural interface. But this is going to be the most efficient Cyber Planner! Not a great name that, is it? I could call myself Mr Clever!"
