Doctor Who: 10 Great Writers For Future Series

6. Paul Abbott

Notable Work: State of Play, Shameless, Hit & Miss Paul Abbott is a writer whose work you definitely would have seen in the last decade- you simply couldn't avoid it! Be it the cracking miniseries State Of Play; cult pre-op-transsexual-assassin series Hit & Miss; or long-running dramedy Shameless, Abbott is perhaps more influential than even Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat. Like him or loathe him, Abbott's creations strike a balance between being controversial, relevant and relatable. And that is something the show needs- a bit of grounded relatability, regardless of whether or not you're a fan of the dark fairytale Doctor Who has become. The reason the show became such a huge hit upon it's return is that people could relate to Rose Tyler, what she was going through, and saw the incredible Universe of Doctor Who through her eyes. Even if it's just for one episode, Abbott would bring something intriguing to proceedings, placing Capaldi in a modern-day setting and having him tackle contemporary issues (not to pigeonhole a guy known for gritty drama, but...) Even if Abbott were to instead write a far-out adventure in deep space and chock full of aliens, you can guarantee that the dialogue would be marvellous and make us invest in whatever peril the characters might be going through. No, scratch that, definitely would be going through.
