Doctor Who: 10 Great Writers For Future Series

5. Abi Morgan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCt060Gh_dg Notable Work: The Hour, Shame, The Iron Lady, Birdsong, Brick Lane, Sex Traffic There's been a lot of hyperbole thus far in this list of talented writers, but Abi Morgan is included because she is one of Britain's most important writers. The Hour was one of the best dramas the BBC has aired in years. She's adapted one of the most beloved novels of all time. She wrote the devastating character study Shame, which contained Michael Fassbender's finest performance. She's courted controversy and opened dialogues on difficult issues. But her writing never feels message-driven or artificial. So it would be fascinating to plant a talent like Morgan in the domain of a 1000 year-old, time-travelling alien. What tone would be struck? Would it be even sweeter for Capaldi to utter her words a second time around (after previously appearing in The Hour)? Could we expect a horror, a romp or even a romantic drama? The show has managed to recruit some of the best writers working today- James Moran, Richard Curtis, Toby Whithouse, Robert Shearman... so it's high time that the production team made the effort to hire Morgan as soon as possible! It may be hard to do- even though The Hour was ruthlessly cancelled, Morgan has a variety of feature projects already on her slate- but it would be worth it.
