Doctor Who: 10 Huge Moffat Plot Twists That Pose Bigger Questions

9. The War Doctor

It's possibly the biggest twist since William Hartnell fell to the floor, only to wake up as Patrick Troughton. No one had dared insert another Doctor into the mythology of the show, and John Hurt was fantastic in the role. Why did no one ever hint at him before though? Yes, he was a secret, but his acts in the Time War weren't. Did no-one ever see this Doctor? He said he'd keep a low profile at the end of Series 6, but by Christmas, he was running from explosions; surely a Doctor who committed double genocide couldn't be that secret? Regardless of that though, it feels like we've missed out somewhat on some of the characterisation involved with this war-weathered incarnation. An audio drama starring Hurt is crying out, really; it would've been impossible to tie up so many threads in 'The Day of the Doctor' whilst keeping the story moving, but it would be nice to know a little more about him.
