8. There Are Other Companion Possibilities Beyond Women in Their 20s From Present Day England Acknowledged - Amy Pond was Scottish. But even she was living in England when she met The Doctor. There's a viewpoint amongst the Doctor Who production staff that the Companion is the viewer's road into understanding The Doctor's adventures, and as such the Companion needs to be someone relatable to viewers. As far as lines of logic go this is all well and good, but somewhere along the way someone appears to have decided that the only type of companion we can possibly relate to is a girl in her 20s from present day England. There was a tendency towards this in the original series as well, particularly in its last few years, but before that we had Nyssa. And Zoe. And Jamie. And God help us, Turlough. Once the shock of seeing Jenna Coleman in Asylum of the Daleks wore off it was replaced with the wonderful possibility that we were about to get a companion who was clever, flirty, and from far in the future. Then they killed her off (sorry... spoilers...) and it was replaced with the hope that we were about to get a new companion who was clever, flirty, and from the Victorian age. Then they killed her off (again... sorry... spoilers...) and we got a companion who was clever, flirty, and... a girl in her early 20s from present day England. There are other options, people.
