Doctor Who: 10 Mind-Blowing Uses Of Foreshadowing You Never Noticed

4. The Red Setting

River Song was like a gift when she first arrived in Doctor Who; a portal to the future for us, teasing what the Doctor would become. Whether you like her or not now, she was unbelievably exciting for Whovians in 'Silence in the Library'. What seemed like a lot of made-up speak to confuse the Doctor about his future €“ including the word "Byzantium" €“ would actually form the basis for other stories. But perhaps the subtlest clue for a future episode came when River told the Doctor to use the red setting on his sonic screwdriver. We can't be sure what exactly she meant, but when the Doctor flicked a switch in 'Cold War' during his stalemate with the Ice Warrior, the screwdriver's bulb turned red. Knowing Mark Gatiss's scrupulous eye for detail, it was probably a reference. Come on then Doctor, when are you going to install the dampeners?
