Doctor Who: 10 Props And Costumes That Miraculously Still Exist

7. A Yeti Costume

We're back to the Yeti again. I mentioned at the start of this article how the Yeti model is one of the few things to survive the early years of Doctor Who. How do you get one better than that? How about an actual Yeti costume? It is not believed that any Yeti costumes survived from 'The Abominable Snowmen' as they were quickly superseded by a new design in 'The Web of Fear'. A Yeti appeared in 'The Five Doctors' however the lighting in the scene is too dark to tell what kind of costume this Yeti is. Nevertheless, it meant there were some Yeti costumes knocking around somewhere in the BBC in the early 80's. They have not been seen on screen since, proving as elusive as their real world counterparts. One Yeti costume however, found its way to the Blackpool Doctor Who exhibition. Looking a little moth eaten, it was kept behind glass in a cabinet forming part of their TARDIS mock up control room, which was kept in almost complete darkness, meaning the costume could hardly be seen. Since the closure of the Blackpool Exhibition, it is uncertain what happened to the Yeti costume. It appears to have entered a private collection as it was tracked down for display at the 50th Anniversary Celebration. Still looking a bit battered, it clearly hasn't been restored, but that being considered, it's remarkable that the costume is as good a shape as it is.
