5. The TV Movie TARDIS Console
Just as remarkably as its predecessor, the console built and used only once for the 1996 TV Movie is alive and kicking. For all its faults, the Doctor Who TV Movie, is a stylish and lavish piece of work. It's too bad that some of the immense sets that were built for the series, probably with long term use in mind were struck and never saw the light of day again. One part that would have been too recognisable to be reused and probably would have just eaten up money taking up space, was the new TARDIS console. It was a big piece as well, being effectively plumbed into the larger, spider-like framework, through the central column. Yet would you believe some fellow managed to take the main console unit home, minus the central column and had it sat in his garage for years. Some fans discovered this and turned it into a restoration project to make the console available for display at some of the vast US conventions. Aside from the missing central column, the console was in surprisingly good shape. Some ornamental bits and pieces had broken off and the electronics were completely ruined, but salvageable. After many months of work, the console was up and running, and slightly modified to incorporate working sound effects. Shortly after it was put on display before Paul McGann, Daphne Ashbrook and Yee Jee Tso themselves, re-enacting the final scenes of the movie. Given so much work was put into restoration, like many of the props it is likely to receive the care and affection that only a fan can give. American Who Fans will have to keep a look out for an appearance at conventions.
