Doctor Who: 10 Props And Costumes That Miraculously Still Exist

4. Two Brass Columns

So far we have seen TARDIS parts dating back to 1983, you might think that finding anything from the first 20 years would be impossible and you would be right. However in the early years, there was far more set dressing in the TARDIS, such as ornamental clocks, chairs, lecterns, Astral Maps and other things that would come and go as the plot demanded. Much of this was hired in from outside firms as building or purchasing props was too costly. During the production of the 50th Anniversary Docudrama 'An Adventure in Time and Space', Mark Gatiss's team was challenged with recreating the rather inconsistent TARDIS set dressing. One part of the set that remained fairly constant through the early series was a pair of brass columns that stood either side of the door and the art department was keen to include them. Upon visiting a prop house in London, the Art Director showed some reference photos of the columns he was seeking a match for. By remarkable coincidence, a pair of columns was in that very room, but more than that, they were the very columns that were used in the series back in 1963. No one could have known where these columns were if they'd been trying to find them, 50 years after their initial use and it is just sheer luck that meant they were rediscovered and put back in the place where they served 50 years ago. A truly remarkable find.
