3. An Original Dalek
Daleks have come and gone throughout the history of Doctor Who and their treatment over the years is somewhat shocking. You only have to watch 'Destiny of the Daleks' to see the amount of wear and tear the props were showing. The current series over its 8 year run has had several sets of Dalek props, but the classic series did not have that luxury. Some Daleks were given away and others simply sustained so much damage they were junked. But what also has to be considered was that the original Daleks were only intended to appear in their original story as a one off, so long term use was not factored into their build. Over the years, the original 1963 props, built by Shawcraft Models, were replaced by pretty much anything the BBC could find that looked like a Dalek and where finances allowed, brand new props. However one original Dalek survived. In 'Remembrance of the Daleks', those with a keen eye, will spot the last surviving complete Dalek from 1963. However, in an act of sheer vandalism, the oldest surviving Dalek was sawn in half to form a walk in exhibit at a Doctor Who exhibition. Yet upon closure, the decapitated prop was put up for auction. Fortunately the purchaser had the best of intentions and located the whereabouts of the missing rear parts of the Dalek in another fan's collection and was able to buy those as well to have the parts reunited and restored by Doctor Who Special Effects guru, Mike Tucker. Thus, the oldest Dalek in existence was complete once more. There are other Dalek remnants in existence in all sorts of collections across the world. The only one comparable to the prop here, is a special slim line prop built specially for 'Evil of the Daleks', which is now currently owned by 'Lord of the Rings' director, Peter Jackson.
