With the days becoming shorter, the sound of the TARDIS is drawing nearer: November 23rd doesn't seem all that long away and the future of Doctor Who hangs in the balance of a single episode. And with such power comes such speculation. All corners of the internet are debating what Steven Moffat could possibly be doing to celebrate a half-century of the world's favourite Time Lord. "We've got to set the Doctor off in a brand new direction. It's chapter two of his life," the Moff recently said about the Oncoming Storm(s), and though we wouldn't even like to guess what he's talking about - I've not once correctly solved a Moffat Cube - there's still plenty to discuss about 'The Day of the Doctor'. So let's have a look at what November 23rd could hold in store for Whovians. What are the questions, and what are you going to do, Steven?
10. What Do Paintings Have To Do With It?
It's the first thing we found out; Matt Smith excitedly teased the single word during an interview with Jonathan Ross, and since then, most of us have been trying to work out whether a return for Vincent van Gogh is on the cards, or whether the Doctor just decides to take up watercolours in his old age (now
that would be a new direction to send the show into). But given that the TARDIS was hovering over the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square (above), could paintings be more key than any of us realise? Is there an adversary in the paintings, or is it some kind of prophesy, just like in 'The Pandorica Opens'? Maybe the Doctor has an exhibition of his past adventures. Or maybe he keeps so young because he has Dorian Grey-style painting... And then of course, some have speculated that these paintings might actually be like the ones from Harry Potter too; what if each incarnation of the Doctor is voiced by their actor, but portrayed by animation within a frame?
