Doctor Who: 10 Rumours About The Day Of The Doctor We Hope Are True

3. Return of The Time Lords

Rassilon (Timothy Dalton) provides the menace in the Tenth Doctor's final, and emotional, appearance. Seen only briefly in David Tennant's final story The End of Time, the people of Galifrey have been more influential by their absence from NewWho than their actual living, breathing presence. The Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctors have all been haunted by their actions in The Last Great Time War and their decision to essentially commit genocide against 2 races; the Daleks and the Time Lords. Depicted in the original Dr Who as a benign, decrepit society of old men content only to observe and not get involved with the lesser species of the universe. As originally portrayed, one could well understand why the Doctor was bored, chose to break the laws of time and fled from his home planet. NewWho portrayed them in a very different light With the resurrected Rasillon (Timothy Dalton) the Time Lords were now depicted as an extremely warlike race with designs on winning their war with the Daleks by any means necessary and responsible for the destruction of countless planets, as well as the repeated death and resurrection of whole species. Of the 50th Anniversary special Steven Moffat has claimed that, "Something happens that changes the way he thinks and the way he will adventure from now on...This is where the story really starts." A return of the race that the Doctor wiped from the pages of history would certainly change things dramatically for the Doctor.
