Doctor Who: 10 Steps To Falling In Love With Peter Capaldi

2. Growing Together

The journey the audience have gone through in getting to know and love this new Doctor has been a long one and it took several episodes to really get going. Whereas Matt Smith€™s Doctor only needed 20 minutes, Peter Capaldi€™s took until almost two thirds of a series. Often things that are immediately attractive and enthralling can fall out of favour just as quickly, where those that we grow to love are held more dear. As we got to know the Doctor again the feeling of unease gave way slowly to genuine affection. Yes, he was more prickly than before, perhaps less likable, but the complexity of his personality and decision making make him all the more interesting. Loving someone fully means accepting their failings and liking them because of, not in spite of, them. Those aspects of his character that were confusing and repulsive at first are recognised as just parts of the whole. It is this whole that the audience have now come to love and there is no better proof of this than going back to watch the series again from the beginning.

I.T. Consultant, technophile and Doctor Who fan. I like to talk about tech, take films apart and make excuses for Doctor Who's continuity errors. No other show has the power to make me feel like a big kid.
