Doctor Who: 10 Steps To Falling In Love With Peter Capaldi
10. Infatuation
Doctor Who is such a huge and important show in the UK that the announcement of the new actor to take on the role had its own half hour prime-time slot on BBC 1. The bookies had their favourites and there were the usual questions of will we now have a female Doctor? Will we get a black or asian Doctor? In the end it came down to a choice of 3 and Pete Capaldi became, in the few days before the announcement, the clear front-runner. An excellent actor with huge gravitas and popularity because of his wonderful turn as Malcolm Tucker, he was also a fan favourite because he is, well, a fan. Internet forums were full of praise for the choice, the decision to go with an older actor again being widely welcomed. There were many memes showing Daleks being told to F&^* off by Mr Tucker and a general feeling that the producers had absolutely made the right choice. We loved Peter Capaldi as the Doctor before he had even touched a sonic screwdriver. But in truth we were only in love with the idea of him as the Doctor and, as anyone who has experienced unrequited love will know, the reality of a person can be vastly different from our preconceptions.
I.T. Consultant, technophile and Doctor Who fan. I like to talk about tech, take films apart and make excuses for Doctor Who's continuity errors. No other show has the power to make me feel like a big kid.
