Doctor Who: 10 Things We Want To See In 'The Day Of The Doctor'

7. Returning Companions

Although Christopher Eccleston famously wants nothing to do with the 50th, there are plenty of opportunities to include the wider Russell T Davies-era universe. Ever the sentimentalist, Davies never let a recurring companion truly die. We know we are already getting Rose, but there is a whole host of other characters who could play supporting roles in this 75 minute episode. With the exception of Donna, almost every companion Davies created is still within reach. Many still hold out hope that John Barrowman has been lying his arse off for months and that Captain Jack really will feature in the episode. This could also open the door for Gwen Cooper, or even Rex from Miracle Day, to make background appearances. Mickey and Martha, now married and working as freelance alien catchers, would be the next most feasible candidates for a return. Surely, the Doctor could do with them on his side if the Time War is about to burst out of its lock and start endangering reality again? The Moffat era is more difficult, with Amy and Rory well out of reach unless the Moff does some serious back-tracking. There is every chance that there could be more River adventures, but the line must be drawn at some point. As is the danger with her parental Ponds, the emotional impact of River€™s departure is lessened each time she saunters back into the show. With her final tease of €˜spoilers€™ in The Name of the Doctor, one expects some kind of return at some point. As for classic companions, I remember reading somewhere that Sophie Aldred (Ace) would consider a return if asked. Perhaps, now settled with a family, she could be thrust into danger only for the Doctor to swoop back into her life. Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane) hasn't yet received an in-cannon main show tribute a-la Brigadier actor Nicholas Courtney, perhaps it has been held back for this episode?
