We were promised that the companions wouldn't get out of 'The Angels Take Manhattan' alive. It was to be one of the most heavy-hearted episodes in the show's history, but the truly cruel thing was, we didn't think that Moffat was going to be quite that mean. Amy and Rory kill all of the Weeping Angels by jumping off a building and creating a paradox. The pair, along with daughter River and well, son-in-law Eleven, find themselves in a graveyard. The Doctor hugs them both: they're about to leave on another adventure. Then Rory is suddenly zapped by an Angel. Amy decides that she can't live without her husband and takes the only opportunity she'll ever get to see him again; the Doctor is crying his eyes out, begging her not to leave him, but River encourages her to do so. For the first time in the series, we properly see a mother-daughter dynamic between River and Amy, and it feels like they've had their time together snatched away from them. The epilogue that Amy writes only makes the story sadder. It's apparent now that the Doctor's alone; his best friends have left him, and he has to move on with his life. It's one of the best exit stories of any character, and a touching one for fans.
