Doctor Who: 3 Things Wrong With The 50th Anniversary

2. The Doctor Is Just A Hero

Mp I found the ending to the 50th anniversary really disappointing €“ I was actually hoping for it all to go wrong and for Gallifrey to be stuck in the timelock. I understand that destroying his entire planet and people was very distressing for the Doctor €“ it was a burden that he had to carry for over 400 years, so I do understand why he did it. But at the same time, having a good-guy all of the time is just dull. One of the main reasons why the show was so successful when it was rebooted with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor was that he was angry and war torn. The Ninth Doctor stormed onto the show with an interesting personality and a grim intensity. He was obviously damaged, and you got to see him develop and recover, sparking off a process which would affect all his successors. Now he's just a boring, standard hero like any other. He's only ever saved people €“ he's never done anything horrific in his life. Although he's had to live with himself thinking that he's destroyed Gallifrey, the Timelords and countless other races, he didn't actually do it, so all of that pain was felt in vain.
