Doctor Who: 5 Best And 5 Worst Companion Send-Offs

2. Adric

Poor Adric. No-one really liked the character, and no wonder. He was very poorly-written throughout most of his time on the series, coming off as the petulant little know-it-all nerd that much of the audience thought themselves to be. They didn€™t need that weekly reminder of their own shortcomings and so they hated the boy (this is much the same problem Wesley Crusher had, by the way). This was unfortunate, because he had a great deal of potential, and had he been better written, he could have been great. When it came time to give Adric the old heave-ho, the series did it in the most memorable way possible: they killed him off. He was the first definitive, absolutely certain, no doubt about it, companion to be killed. It devastated the Doctor and his other companions, probably left no small amount of the viewing audience in utter shock, and insured a certain level of immortality for the character. Killing off a fifteen-year-old boy on the series is something that new Who wouldn€™t touch with a ten-foot pole, especially not one that had been traveling with the Doctor for a while. Old school Doctor Who went there, and to great effect; so much so that even now, people still talk about it as one of the greatest moments of the series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idEcvdL_zHA
