3. The Edge Of Destruction
What It's About: The Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan leave Skaro in quite a hurry. There is an explosion in the TARDIS that knock them unconscious and when they come round, they realise there's something very wrong with the TARDIS. A white void appears where the doors should be, clocks are melting and all of a sudden, paranoia sweeps the TARDIS crew. Is one of them responsible for sabotaging the ship, or has an alien force invaded the TARDIS?
Why I Would Like A Remake: This idea was terrifying. Coming off the back of the first Dalek story, it's followed by a totally different type of story, and is one of the few stories that doesn't feature a villain. Instead of a standard enemy, the main adversary was fear and paranoia. The Doctor who in the opening few stories hadn't exactly covered himself in glory appeared to be even more sinister. Each of them becomes a suspect, and because the audience has only had 10 weeks to get to know these characters, the audience begin to have their doubts of the other three protagonists. All of them appear shifty and Ian and Barbara definitely have motive, as they were essentially kidnapped in the first story. The claustrophobic feel of the episode gave a really eerie and uneasy feeling throughout the serial. Peter Capaldi's Doctor is meant to have a darker edge. If he is the last Doctor, or even the 12th, he shouldn't be as happy-go-lucky as he has been in recent years. The Doctor will have to face his mortality, so this will undoubtedly give him a more sinister edge. He would also I imagine be more paranoid, as he would be fearful of someone killing him and ending his life with no regenerations left. This would make this style of episode perfect for a darker Doctor and it would also test his relationship with Clara, or if Clara leaves, his latest companions. It's about time for another stowaway in the TARDIS like there were 70s and 80s a person the Doctor would be wary of and would continue to be if something malfunctions like in Edge of Destruction. So I think a remake of this would really give Capaldi an opportunity to showcase the Doctor's darker nature, as well as giving us the same claustrophobic edge to a story that it did in 1964.
