Doctor Who: 5 Questions Which May Go Forever Unanswered

3. Whatever Happened To Romana?

Ah, Romanadvoratrelundar, that all-time favorite Time Lady, whatever happened to you? We last saw you on screen in the underrated classic "Warriors' Gate," walking away from the Doctor and Adric in a noble bid to serve the artificial life of a tin dog and/or to assist in the Tharil struggle for freedom and equality. A noble exit, to be sure, but we miss you, Romana (or Fred, a sobriquet I understand you may prefer). Thanks to that single-line enumeration of companions in "The Night of the Doctor," true devotees can learn the second part of your story, accepted as the Big Finish audio adventures now are into Official Doctor Who Canon„. From these, we may learn that you escaped from E-space, ascended to the Gallifreyean presidency (always knew you had it in you in any incarnation!), palled around with a few Doctors, thwarted the Daleks on at least two occasions and... Well, that's where your story thus far seems to end. Doctor Who fans want to know: What happened then? In both "The End of Time" and "The Day of the Doctor" we're shown lots of key members of Gallifrey's political and military elite (even Rassilon, for gods' sake) but not a whisper of your whereabouts. All we have to go on here on Terra are the depressing words of the showrunner: "I have actually given no thought at all to Romana." (He considers himself a fan? For shame!) "The Time Lords are dead in my mind." Just say it ain't so, Fred. Say it ain't so.

Except Doctor Who. That's what Os writes about here -- at least for now...
