5. Humanity Made The Wrong Choice

Kill The Moon may have ended with humanity on the verge or rekindling their interest in outer space but they almost never got there. Continuing the darker themes of series eight, this episode presented us humans who were fallible. From Hermione Norris's cold, bitter Lundvik, who had the fate of humanity on her weary shoulders, to a desperate Earth that would choose to let alien life die if it meant the tides destroying their coastlines ended. It was a believable choice too. The effects of the moon breaking up had already devastated parts of the planet; given that they did not know the true nature of what would happen - the moon would disintegrate and not break up over Earth - it is understandable that even Clara would have doubts over whether to save the alien within. Ultimately, turning off their lights in solidarity, choosing to blow up the moon and the alien with it was the wrong choice. But it had become a hard choice over one life over another. If the events of recent decades, from the Cyberman invading London in The Invasion to Daleks attacking Earth in The Stolen Earth, humanity would be far more wary of alien life when they encountered it. Is it any wonder they chose not to let the alien live?
