Doctor Who Series 8: 10 Moments We're Most Looking Forward To

9. Foxes Sings €“ Episode 8

Until it happens, this scene is going to really split opinions amongst viewers and, once it does, it€™ll most likely still be handbags at dawn on forums and fansites for some time afterwards. Singer-songwriter Foxes will be guest-starring in Episode 8 to the ire of some fans who are sceptical about her acting abilities given that this will be her first television credit, and believe that this kind of guest casting devalues the programme. But this is by no means a new phenomenon. Original songs by Murray Gold have been featured in a number of episodes, singer Yamit Mamo had a minor role in Voyage Of The Damned, and two episodes in the past few years have used an original song performed in the episode as a plot point. There€™s a lot of scope for how Foxes€™ performance could work within the episode and it€™s almost certain that whatever the song she is writing is, it will be something that suits the tone, setting, and plot of the episode. Particularly as she has been quoted as saying that it's different from her usual work. This is a moment to look forward to because it will be something away from the norm (though not brand new) and, depending on how it€™s used, could end up being equal to or even better than Katherine Jenkins€™ magnificent performance of Silence Is All You Know in 2010's A Christmas Carol. But the real reason to look forward to this moment is that the BBC haven€™t yet let us down with original songs or guest singers, and it€™s doubtful that they€™re about to start now. And anyway, we saw the absolute nadir of Doctor Who-related music back in the late 1980s and it will be almost impossible for Foxes' song to be worse than Doctor In Distress.
