10. The Chips Suggestion Repeats A Conversation With Rose (Deep Breath)

With Clara just about coming to terms with the new incarnation of her alien buddy, at the end of Deep Breath the Doctor proposes they have chips. Or coffee. Or chips and coffee. It's a funny food combo that brings to mind fish fingers and custard. But in fact it's calling back further than that. In The End Of The World, after a pretty morbid conversation about the destruction of Earth and hints at the Time War, Rose gets a sudden craving for chips, which no doubt proves an integral bonding point between the Ninth Doctor and his first companion. With the Doctor unable to pay in both cases, it's evident this is more than just an accidental parallel. Is the Doctor falling back on old memories in an attempt to form a relationship with Clara, or is his memory loss letting him get confused between times? Either way it's a nice little throw-back to a very different era of the show.
