The Fifth Doctor
Style: John Nathan Turner wanted to bring the programme kicking and screaming in the 80's. He certainly did that with lens flared stars and the trailing effect on the face. This sequence was first used for Tom Baker's final season but it's pointless reviewing that separately because it is the same as this one but oddly with fewer stars, so for the most part we have black empty space. This could have been much worse as at least the stars are moving and layered so it actually feels like traveling. It's really quite bland and must have looked dated at the time. It doesn't seem to go anywhere. It's just stars and black, trying to cash in on the Star Wars effect. The headshot of Peter Davison just looks boring as well. It is a shot of Peter Davison, not the Doctor.
Score: 4 The Logo: Neon tube logo. Why not go all the way and make it light up bright green. It really is awful and out of all the logos the series has had was used second longest. Used for 6 years and over 3 variations of the title sequence and I can't fathom why. Plus it is just plain white, nothing all that visually interesting. I honestly don't like it and it has not survived the test of time.
Score: 2 The Theme: About the only thing that I can positively give thumbs up to is the reimagining of the theme music. It manages to be trendy and alien as well reimagining not the tune, but the theme, the atmosphere behind it that made it great. That is what makes this version successful. It is an updated version of a theme and it came at the right time. Coming up to two decades it was bound to happen sooner or later and at least it was done well.
