The Seventh Doctor
Style: Again this was a radical departure from anything that had gone previously and is actually fairly impressive for the time. It's just too bad that nothing that ever followed the title sequence ever matched that quality. It's quite a cool sequence, a bit dated admittedly but it is a funky set of graphics. The only ropey part is the asteroids that pass the camera that look like screwed up balls of paper and a just awful. Take that out and I think this sequence would be a lot more solid overall but it's like someone stuck a flag in it saying 'cheap'. Also another criticism I have is that as a sequence it is far too long. It goes on for around a minute due to the changes to the theme music. The TARDIS makes a welcome return to the title sequence and puts in the energy, dynamism and visual interest the previous sequence lacked.
Score: 7 The Logo: What were they thinking. When I saw this for the first time I didn't think it was real, I thought it was some knock off or fan design but nope it's real. It looks like a cheesy, 90's, American, childrens', sci fi show. This is the kind of look that at the time would have been going out on Childrens' BBC. Then again that's where the standard of the show seemed to be heading. Someone in the design department either hadn't seen the programme but heard about it or just didn't care or both. The signature 'Doctor' is abysmal and is the epitome of tacky.
Score: 1 The Theme: Keff McCulloch has a lot to answer for. Apart from 3 years of awful stabbing keyboard music that sounds like being beaten to death with synth pop, thinking he was so cool probably, he gives us this awful trashy variation of the theme. He completely misses the point of the theme. He cuts the diddly dums from the beginning, he puts the middle eight in the opening and the sting is replaced with a pop. As a result of this, the opening theme is more like the closing theme and messes up the timings. This is why the opening is so long, with this tasteless variation of the theme. The only small merit is that they didn't create a new theme altogether.
