Doctor Who: 10 Actors Who Should Replace Peter Capaldi
6. Paterson Joseph
Why He'd Be Great
Best known for his role as Johnson on Peep Show, Joseph would easily be able to bring those comic sensibilities - humour, smugness, superiority, swagger - to the Doctor, but also has the qualities to take the character in a darker direction too.
As shown on TV shows like The Leftovers, his extensive theatre work, and supporting role in movie The Beach, he's more than capable of strong dramatic acting, with the presence and sense of theatricality to lead the show. He's also currently appearing in Timeless, a US time-travelling series, so will know his way around this kind of material.
Chances Of It Happening
Slim-ish. Joseph's name will always be mentioned whenever a vacancy comes up in the TARDIS, given he's been tipped for the part ever since David Tennant announced he was leaving.
He has previously appeared in Who, but as Capaldi's casting proves that isn't really an issue. Indeed, perhaps the biggest thing standing in his way is that he's such a fan-casting, something producers often tend to veer away from. It may also depend on how Timeless pans out, because he could be a bit too busy anyway.
