Doctor Who: 10 Best Dalek Stories
6. The Daleks
There's nothing quite like an origin story. Fun fact, this isn't it. Though it may be the first appearance of the terrifying tin cans, it's not where they began. It doesn't mean their first TV story was forgettable, however. Much against Sydney Newman's wishes, the Daleks were created, and Sci-Fi television was never the same again. Featuring a pretty standard Sci-Fi plot of a planet devastated by war, with two enemy races fighting atop it, the setup wasn't anything spectacular. However, as we got to know the Daleks better, we grew to love these pepperpots, even if we did go bolting behind the sofa each and every time one trundled on-screen.
Featuring a Doctor willingly putting his companions in peril purely to satisfy his curiosity, and the birth of the most-recurring enemy in the show's repertoire, The Daleks set the bar for both Doctor Who and Dalek stories overall. Dalekmania swooped across the UK after the serial aired, boosting the show's audience ratings and turning this relatively unknown television programme into a British institution- a position it still holds today.
