Doctor Who: 10 Best Episodes Of The Last 10 Years

5. Father's Day (2005)

In this stand out episode from Doctor Who's first series, Rose Tyler asked the Doctor to take her to the day her father Pete died. Rose wanted a chance to finally meet him for herself since he had died when she was just a baby. The Doctor cautioned her that they would be able to only observe him from a distance and Rose initially agreed to the Doctor's conditions but ultimately succumbed to temptation and pushed Pete out of the path of the car that was supposed to kill him. Her actions created a paradox that summoned the Reapers, creatures that fed on wounds in time, and the only thing that would appease them was Pete's death.

One of the best parts of Father's Day was how it focused on the consequences of time travel and what happens when someone interferes with how events are supposed to play out, a theme further explored in subsequent series. But what really set it apart from the other episodes in that series was the situation Rose faced. When given a chance to save her father, how could she refuse? Would we have chosen any differently if we had a chance to save a loved one who was taken from us too soon?
