Doctor Who: 10 Best Multi-Part Stories In Nu Who
4. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
Moffat demonstrated his credentials for showrunner early on with this stand-out two-parter in the shows first season. Set in World War II at the height of the London Blitz, the Doctor and Rose quickly discover that there are more than just bombs to be worried about. A lonely child is walking the streets calling for his mummy, and all of the other children are terrified of him.
This story is an example of Moffat at his best; somehow striking a balance between the wacky nature of Doctor Who, the dark side of Doctor Who and managing to craft a story unsettling enough to stick in your mind (even all these years later) but not so unsettling younger viewers are turned off of watching the programme.
Let’s not forget, it’s also the episode that introduced us to fan favourite recurring character Captain Jack Harkness who would go on to appear several more times and get his own spin-off show Torchwood.
Some of the effects have not aged all that well in the intervening years but the direction, acting and writing are all sufficient enough to make up for that.
