Doctor Who: 10 Best NuWho Episodes
9. The Girl In The Fireplace
Steven Moffat has given us some of the best stories for the
modern run of Doctor Who and this next entry will not be the last credit on
this list.
This adventure to 18th century Versailles (somehow contained within a 51st century spaceship home to killer clockwork droids) features a sinister plot revolving around the celebrity historical figure, Madame de Pompadour.
An emotional roller-coaster from beginning to end, this
episode has the romance, action and thrills of a Hollywood blockbuster, with a
clever and heart wrenching screenplay by Moffat and the uncredited Sydney
Newman.
Guest star Sophia Myles embodies a believable elegance and
grounded charm to Reinette and she shares great chemistry with Tennant. Euros
Lyn directed a beautiful episode, with an authentic set design and memorable
visuals that depict a huge juxtaposition in times amidst a futuristic,
industrial space ship and the fashionable flamboyance of France in the past.
The monsters have a truly striking design, with a creepy
clock ticking sound effect heightening the thrills and a gut punch of an ending
may leave you feeling drained, but what a journey well worth investing in!
