Doctor Who: 10 Best NuWho Guest Stars Ever

3. Carey Mulligan

Speaking of characters fans want to come back, Carey Mulligan's Sally Sparrow is also fairly high up on that list. With Mulligan shooting to stardom as a result of roles in films like The Great Gatsby, Drive and most recently Far From the Madding Crowd, it's unlikely. But a Whovian can dream, right?

She played Sally Sparrow in Series 3's Hugo award-winning episode Blink where she had to be the central focus of the Doctor-lite adventure. Given David Tennant's popularity that was no mean feat, even writer Steven Moffat has stated he didn't think the episode would work as well as it did. But Mulligan managed it.

She made Sally resourceful, intelligent, courageous and pragmatic, all traits that helped viewers to get behind and root for the character. Her work in creating a believable sense of friendship with the other actors helped to make Sally feel three-dimensional and the sad moments are played really well, too.

She also managed to create a character exasperated and annoyed by the Tenth Doctor and still get viewers onside. Which is pretty impressive.
