Doctor Who: 10 Best TARDIS Interior Designs
5. The First Doctor's TARDIS (1963-1969)
"The original, you might say."
This console has been getting a lot of love recently, ever since it was beautifully recreated in the 2013 Docu-Drama/Doctor Who love-letter ‘An Adventure In Space and Time’. This interior made a resurgence in New Series episodes such as ‘Hell Bent’ and ‘Twice Upon A Time’, and worked just as well with Capaldi as it did with Hartnell, showing how truly timeless this original design is, and a testament to the work of the original production team.
The first time we saw the TARDIS interior was a magical, albeit trippy experience. It was the largest interior ever built for the Classic Series, truly "bigger on the inside". Unfortunately, the show's budgetary restraints took their toll. The interior was gradually downgraded as time went on and the Second Doctor saw many of his walls replaced with large, flat, paper replacements, leaving the crew very cramped.
Thankfully, its legacy has been preserved in recent stories, but its original run was one hell of a rocky road.
