"Please tell me I didn't get old... anything but old..." It's taking some time to get used to an older Doctor again, but Peter Capaldi is absolutely fantastic. That being said, Deep Breath showed us what a great Doctor Peter would be, but it wasn't the best premiere mainly because it brought out the absolute worst in Clara. The companion who was built up to us as the one who understood the Doctor's regeneration cycle better than any other companion (seriously, she met at least three of them herself alone) is basically a weeping mess of denial over losing Eleven for pretty much the entire episode. It isn't until the very end when Clara gets a phone call from Eleven himself right before his regeneration at Trenzalore, begging her to stay with his new self. Even after that, she still doesn't much accept the fact that he's really the Doctor; that moment where she accused him of eavesdropping on a call he made himself made us want to throw things at her on our TV screen. This whole episode was a facepalm moment, just mainly the ending. The phone call seemed like a hokey torch passing moment, one that was overly unnecessary. It seemed like an effort to win back the fangirls who only watched the show to begin with because they had a crush on David and Matt, whom quite frankly Doctor Who can live on without. That's not to say Clara hasn't had her moments with Peter's Doctor, because honestly after Deep Breath she's been fantastic and the dynamic between Peter and Clara this past season has been nothing short of superior to the chemistry with Matt, but as the Doctor himself said "times change," and so must he. Let the man do his thing.
