Doctor Who: 10 Biggest Facepalm Moments

5. The Matt Smith Era Resolution (The Time Of The Doctor)

This finale was riddled with facepalms but there was one huge one that was just plain head scratching, and that was Handles. That was a big one that made absolutely no sense and served practically no purpose other than giving Peter Capaldi one of his opening lines, "Handles??? Wow, you've let yourself go." The true nature of this hour long facepalm (okay, maybe like 45 minutes or so because the two pronged regeneration itself was fantastic) was this episode's attempt to wrap up every single loose plot thread over the past three years into one hour, and there were a lot of them. Matt Smith was the first Doctor in the revival to have an overarching story arc throughout his entire tenure, as opposed to Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant who mainly had one off stories. Some of them had more gravitas than others; the resolution as to what was behind the Doctor's door in The God Complex was pretty great, while the Doctor telling Clara that the Silents are actually priests who make you forget you ever confessed, like he knew who they were the entire time, wasn't so great. Then you have the entire story line of seasons 5 and 6 completely explained by Tasha Lem in basically one sentence like they were in a hurry, which was incredibly disappointing. Basically, Matt Smith's final outing was plagued with the same problems as The Wedding of River Song: too much climax, leaving little room for resolution.
