5. Rodney Trotter Only Fools And Horses
Every assistant needs saving from time to time and Rodney Trotter definitely fits the damsel in distress criteria; his naivety, gullibility and sheer lack of common sense often landing him in a variety of dilemmas. When hes not calling out for the Doctor to save him from some predicament, his inquisitive nature would make him a brilliant addition to the show, as hed ask the questions on the tip of the audiences tongues and would help to map out the episodes for the viewers. Rodneys also not a stranger to the duties of an assistant; having completed the boring jobs of cleaning out the van and watching for the police, while brother, Del Boy, did the dirty work. Of course, Del Boy seems a much more proactive choice for the Doctors companion, as hes capable of thinking on his feet and has a head for creative ideas. But his crazy, money-making schemes would surely be too much of a risk: the Doctor doesnt exactly want alien gimmicks sold on the black market! Taking Rodney in the TARDIS would definitely be comical and his familiarity with the rubbish jobs would certainly save the Doctor time. It would also give him the independence from his brother that he has so desperately craved: if he can stay out of trouble long enough to experience it.
