Doctor Who: 10 Directions The Show Could Go In Next

3. The Doctor's Sexuality

As anyone who has seen Sex Education will know, Gatwa's character, Eric, is gay. The actor himself has always kept his private life private, but has become something of a gay icon through playing the role.

Conversely, Russell T Davies has made no secret about his sexuality. He created the influential LGBTQ+ series Queer as Folk, and has acknowledged his own homosexuality in other works such as Cucumber and It's a Sin.

While they are under no obligation to do so, this combination of writer and actor could pave the way for a progressive change in the character of the Doctor.

This could be the next logical step for the character, as it has already been acknowledged that the Thirteenth Doctor and her companion Yaz had romantic feelings for each other. Nothing ever happened between them, but perhaps the new Doctor could take things a step further, with a full-blown same-sex romance.

Davies has always been a writer who pushes boundaries, and Gatwa has already been involved in a groundbreaking show. The two of them together could make for a fantastic combination.
