This list mainly covers the Doctor Who television series, but there are couple of entries from the audio works of Big Finish in here, too.
Of course, be warned, for there are obviously spoilers involved here for both the TV episodes and audiobooks featured in this list.
10. John Polidori – The Haunting Of Villa Diodati
John Polidori, whilst not as famous as the rest of the guests in this episode, was a writer as well as a physician. His most famous work is a novella called The Vampyre, which is often credited with being one of the first modern vampire tales to be published in English.
This episode has the distinction, then, of including four published writers from the 19th century meeting the Doctor at once. Although Mary Shelley does seem to be the main focus of the episode, kudos has to be given to the scriptwriter for ensuring everyone in the villa is involved in the adventure.
In Polidori’s case, his sleepwalking helps the Doctor realise that the house isn’t actually physically changing – it just appears to be. He also challenges Ryan to a duel, due to his quick temper. Luckily for Ryan, if you can call it lucky, a scuttling skeleton hand interrupts them!
