Doctor Who: 10 Famous Writers The Doctor Has Met
7. Mary And Percy Shelley - The Haunting Of Villa Diodati
Alright, this is a bit of a cheat, we’ve bunged these two together because they were a couple, though the fact is they were both individually excellent writers. Their works are still studied in schools, even today.
As stated above, Mary appears to be the main focus of the Diodati episode. It is set on the night that she is inspired to write Frankenstein, and it is her history that is most explored. She is also the one who confronts the Lone Cyberman with compassion. However, this does not mean Percy is side-lined, in fact his absence alerts the Doctor that something has gone wrong. When they eventually do find Percy, it turns out the haunting was caused by him, after he was taken over by the Cyberium.
For those interested in reading Percy’s work, his poetry can be found online, whilst there are plenty of adaptions of Frankenstein to watch. There is also another version of Mary Shelley that has appeared in Doctor Who. This Mary became the Eighth Doctor’s companion for a short time in Big Finish audios, beginning with a slightly different version of the night at Diodati.
