Doctor Who: 10 Famous Writers The Doctor Has Met
2. Charles Dickens – The Unquiet Dead
Charles Dickens was a great writer, whose works are known for their characters and social commentary. His most popular story of course is A Christmas Carol - a tale that Doctor Who itself mimics in one of its festive specials.
In the Unquiet Dead, Dickens is visiting Cardiff, to do a reading at a theatre. However, when a ghostly woman appears in the middle of his audience, he ends up running into the Doctor and Rose. The Doctor commandeers Dickens’ carriage, unaware he is the novelist. He is thrilled when he finds out, and declares himself the author’s biggest fan. Flattered by the praise, and keen to know if the ghosts are real or not, Dickens joins the Doctor as he investigates. What makes this encounter stand out from the others mentioned in this article, is that Dickens is the one who figures out how to stop the monsters at the end of the episode, not the Doctor.
Several Doctor Who actors have turned up in
Dickens adaptions. Paul McGann is in Our Mutual Friend, Peter Capaldi appears
in the recent David Copperfield film and there’s a quick cameo from Nicola
Bryant in Blackadder’s Christmas Carol.
