Doctor Who: 10 Final Candidates For The 12th Doctor

4. Toby Jones

Again, it€™s a weird one this, seeing as Jones already appears to have had a memorable stint as the Dream Lord in Matt Smith€™s debut series. Fans have speculated about him ever since with some believing he could return as NuWho€™s version of the Valeyard. Yet for the time being that honour appears to have been passed to John Hurt, leaving us thinking that perhaps they didn€™t have any other plans for Jones€™ character, aside from that one-shot performance. With this in mind, would it be so incongruous for him to pick up the role of the Doctor? If anything, it might be a cheeky little nod to the Doctor€™s history €“ Jones€™ character was clearly a mirror of the Timelord, and it wouldn€™t be too hard a jump for Moffat (especially given his history of bonkers plotting) to ret-con this past appearance into some form of regeneration prophecy. If anything, it€™ll be a very different way to approach the event €“ usually, the Doctor has no idea what he€™s going to end up like, but having him take on the guise of someone he€™s seen before in his subconscious could provide a novel twist.
