Doctor Who: 10 Greatest NuWho Speeches
6. That’s Who I Am - Ninth Doctor
I can feel it. The turn of the Earth, the ground beneath our feet is spinning at 1,000 miles per hour and the entire planet is hurtling around the sun at 67,000 miles an hour and I can feel it.
The first speech we get from NuWho, Christopher Eccleston executes this perfectly, making it feel as if he is talking directly to the viewers and solidifying himself as The Doctor. A long answer to Rose’s “who are you?” question, The Doctor shows off his mysterious side as he explains how he can feel the Earth move fast through time and space, while we can’t feel anything and constantly think we’re just standing still.
He tells Rose to go home and distance herself from him, as we find out later he believes himself to be a dangerous man after just fighting in the Time War and killing both his people and all the Daleks.
This monologue encapsulates everything that The Doctor is. His intelligence, wisdom, and the way he views the universe are put front and centre for the viewers to be reintroduced into the character after such a long absence.
We are shown exactly what The Doctor stands for and who he is, but more importantly, we are shown who he thinks he is – which is always a completely different man than his companions and the viewers see him as.
