Doctor Who: 10 Greatest NuWho Speeches
4. The Doctor's Sacrifice - Tenth Doctor
But me, I could do so much more, so much more! But this is what I get…my reward, and it’s not fair!
When The Doctor realises he didn’t escape his end, we see his ego and pride at an all-time high, taking out all his frustrations and anger on his friend who innocently saved another's life without knowing the full consequences of his actions.
We see that The Doctor was contemplating to save Wilfred, which is something completely out-of-character for him, as The Doctor usually puts people – especially his friends and companions – above himself.
We can see the pain and confusion he is feeling as he paces around the room yelling how he could do so much more and how unfair it is that he constantly has to sacrifice himself after saving the world multiple times.
The Doctor’s sacrifice/breakdown speech also shows the viewers how terrified The Doctor is at regeneration. Previously, we saw the Ninth Doctor willingly regenerate with no fear or tears but with hope that he will regenerate into a better man. However, with Ten, this is the first we’ve seen The Doctor try to cheat his regeneration cycle and panic when he figures out he can’t run from it anymore.
