Doctor Who: 10 Greatest Villains From The Moffat Era So Far

5. Mr Clever (Nightmare In Silver)

What makes Mr Clever quite so threatening is that, well, he€™s actually the Doctor. The effect of the Cybermen trying to convert the Doctor, Mr Clever is the result of Cyber-technology being combined with a Time Lord mind. He€™s over the top - relishing everything about the new possibilities allowed by engulfing the Doctor - and creates an unnerving scenario for the other characters since he means the Doctor, who would otherwise save them, can€™t be trusted. Despite eventually being tricked by the Time Lord, there€™s a sense that Mr Clever manages to make the Doctor nervous about the whole encounter (the villain is in his head, after all), so much so that the Doctor willingly threatens to use a regeneration fans later find out he doesn€™t have to bluff against the cyber-version of himself. There€™s even the suggestion that Mr Clever could beat the Doctor, having outplayed him at chess - one that just increases his threat level. It€™s the fantastic central dual performance by Matt Smith that really makes this work, showing off his true talents as an actor. In fact, it€™s the quality of what Matt Smith does to create the idea of a sinister enemy using the Doctor€™s body and image that ultimately makes Mr Clever truly memorable, and as such worthy of fifth place on this list.
