9. The Silence

One of the most iconic creatures of the revival, the Silence actually have quite a bit of impact on the background mythos of the series. Not only were they the organisation behind most of the attempts on the Eleventh Doctor's life, the bigger change was the fact that the Silence had been behind most of humanity's development, hiding out on Earth to ensure that humanity aimed to reach the moon so they could use a spacesuit in an over the top assassination attempt. It is a little convoluted. However, they also have a role in developing the various religions of the universe, being part of the Church of the Papal Mainframe which seems to be a kind of intergalactic police force/army with the role of keeping the peace more than an actual church. Furthermore, they help the Doctor to battle the Daleks on Trenzalore. Speaking of which...
