Doctor Who: 10 Most Disturbing Episodes
7. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
Before "Blink" was out in the world, causing Doctor Who fans to sweat, viewers had the memory of this terrifying outing to keep them feeling nervous. This two-part special gave audiences one of the creepiest villains ever seen in the series and some utterly horrifying imagery that still remains in young viewers minds today.
The episodes chronicle the events after The Ninth Doctor and his companion Rose Tyler find themselves in 1941 during the London Blitz. They meet the enigmatic Captain Jack Harkness but soon discover that the city is being terrorized by a young boy in a gas mask, repeatedly asking for his mother.
There is something so inherently disturbing in witnessing a young child as the monster. Seeing the innocence of a youngster being turned into a ghastly creature is incredibly disturbing, and this episode makes it worse with the classic "are you my mummy?" phrase that really brings the concept home.
Additionally, the scene that saw Dr Constantine slowly sprout a gas mask from his face should be enough to keep anyone up at night.
