Doctor Who: 10 Most Disturbing Episodes
3. The Waters Of Mars
With the Mars Rover recently giving us a 360 view of the red planet, we can only hope that none of the shenanigans from this episode appears in it.
"The Waters of Mars" was one of the Tenth Doctor's darkest outings, not just because of the disturbing visuals but also because of the incredibly macabre narrative that addressed what it's like to know someone is going to die.
The episode follows the Doctor as he lands near Mars' first human colony in 2059. There he meets Captain Adelaide Brooks and realises that he's at a fixed point in time. He knows that the base will explode and Adelaide will die, but if he tries to save her, he will ruin a pivotal moment in human history. Alongside his conflictions comes a horrifying virus that causes the crewmen to appear in a zombie-like state with water spewing from their mouths.
It isn't just the narrative that grants this episode disturbing status, as the visuals are some of the most haunting in the whole show. The virus victims' cracked faces make them look incredibly uncanny, and the general tone of the episode reflects this too.
Everything is downright creepy, as the deceased characters look terrifying, and the concept of death is always rearing it's ugly head. This outing of the fun time travelling show truly felt like the BBC's take on absolute horror.
