3. Dark Water
Here's another example of a "game-changing" Doctor Who revelation that had been practically preempted by the show's fandom before it even made it to the airwaves. To all intents and purposes, though, the cliffhanger that followed the reveal of Missy's true identity was as climactic as they come. After teasing us with a handful of tantalising appearances throughout the course of the series, viewers were well and truly champing at the bit when the time finally came for Missy to let the cat out of the bag at the end of Dark Water. It's a real shame, then, that most of us had figured out who she was already. She certainly revelled in being able to drop such an almighty bombshell on the Doctor's life so it was still immensely satisfying to watch the drama unfold, if only for the titular Time Lord's realisation that his former best friend had gone and regenerated into a woman. In true Steven Moffat style, this cliffhanger was actually a triple threat. While the Doctor was adjusting to the female incarnate of his arch nemesis, Clara was being interrogated by the Cybermen and Danny Pink was about to delete his memories. Things were looking pretty bad for everyone concerned but, as always, it was all tied up - or ignored altogether - before the titles had even rolled on the following episode which ultimately makes this cliffhanger as infuriating as the rest. It's still saved by the look on Peter Capaldi face when the Doctor discovers who Missy really is. Look at the eyebrows go!
