Doctor Who: 10 Most Poetic Moments

2. Van Gogh's Gallery Scene (Vincent And The Doctor)

Doctor Who's time travelling adventures have seen him become acquainted with a number of historical figures. So when Amy and the Doctor notice a monster painted into the background of one of Van Gogh's paintings, they head for 1890 to investigate.

While it seems at first to be another villain-of-the-week affair, the interactions between Van Gogh, the Doctor and Amy steal the show from the alien haunting the painter.

It's no secret that Van Gogh had his share of personal demons, which is something that the episode handles truthfully and sensitively. It's difficult enough watching Van Gogh struggle with his mental health and his feelings of inadequacy, but when the Doctor decides to transport him to a modern-day gallery, the episode takes a turn into tear-jerker territory.

Faced with the knowledge that he posthumously becomes considered the greatest painter of all time, Van Gogh breaks down in tears as Bill Nighy delivers a glowing critical evaluation of his works. It's a moment that came almost out of nowhere to hit everyone right in the feels.
