1. Return Of An Old Enemy
At the very end of Big Finish's audio, The Whispering Forest, featuring the Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Turlough and Nyssa, something happens that may have been slightly expected, but still surprising nevertheless. Throughout the story, Tegan has been complaining about headaches, and it finally builds up to the very last moment, which will lead into the next audio that follows, called The Cradle of the Snake. The Mara has returned. The Mara is an evil being that takes over the mind and controls that person. When it is forced from the person's mind, it is in the form of a giant snake. It had happened to Tegan twice before in two television episodes, one being Kinda, and the sequel being Snakedance. The evidence is finally clear that Tegan's mind is at stake in the last minute of the audio. When Nyssa and the Doctor try to get her back into the TARDIS, she lets out a deep, hauntingly familiar laugh. This is shocking for this particular audio, because there is no mention of it. It just happens. The Mara has always been popular with fans. Maybe it's the way Janet Fielding had been able to prove herself as a strong actress with being able to show Tegan slowly losing her mind due to some vicious creature, or maybe it's just the thought of something that is capable of doing such a thing to begin with. So, when it finally appears at the very end of an audio when it's not even mentioned, people were ecstatic. They knew what episode was to follow. Which shocking Doctor Who moments are your favourite?
