Doctor Who: 10 Most Shocking Moments

daleksmasterplan

There have always been moments in Doctor Who that have left the viewer with a raised eyebrow, confused or even a bit teary-eyed. But Doctor Who has always been known, even from the time it had started, to really blow people's minds with some of the serials and what actually happens in them. Most of the time it happens to the companions, or even people helping out the Doctor, such as Sara Kingdom. We're going to take a look back at 10 of the most shocking moments to be in Doctor Who, Classic and New. This isn't a best 10 list, more like some of the most memorable. Some no longer exist in full episodes, but rather re-constructed clips, and other lost episodes do have the brief existing footage of some of these moments. Of course, shocking moments vary from person to person, but I think there are at least one or two everyone can agree on...

10. Death Of Katarina

Katarina4

The first companion to ever be killed off on Doctor Who was a Trojan handmaiden named Katarina. Vicki had left in the story The Myth Makers, and this was the introduction to Katarina. She was only in a few episodes of The Dalek's Masterplan, meeting her tragic end in episode four. She was taken hostage by a man named Kirksen, and he locked himself and Katarina in an airlock. Steven pleaded with Bret Vyon, played by Nicholas Courtney, who would later become Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, to turn the ship around and take Kirksen where he demanded to go. In the background, you can hear the screams of Katarina in the airlock, and by the time Bret decides to meet Kirksen's demands, Katarina hits a button and she and Kirksen are ejected into space, much to the dismay of Steven and the Doctor. Katarina had done so in order to save the lives of her two friends. There is very little footage left, but the scene of Katarina actually struggling and hitting the button exists. Besides the full length audio CDs, there are video reconstructions using still photos, and actual clips for the Dalek's Masterplan. One of the main reasons why she belongs on the list is that she was a companion who was written out in such a tragic way. No one had ever thought about doing that up until this point.
